Grounded in Truth…

National Reconciliation Week is this week and it is a time for all staff at NEMMS JV to take time to reflect how we contribute to the reconciliation journey.

This year’s theme is “Grounded in Truth. Walk together with courage.” The theme focuses on one of the five dimensions of reconciliation set out by Reconciliation Australia, race relations. “At the heart of reconciliation is the relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To foster positive race relations, our relationship must be grounded in a foundation of truth.” (Reconciliation.org.au)

Reconciliation Australia have many resources online that have helped us to gather information about how we can start conversations within our organisation. Our sites will run through a presentation next week which covers the significant events that mark the week, Sorry Day on the 26th May, the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum on the 27th and Mabo Day on the 3rd June.
Taking the time to educate our staff about Australia’s history allows us to start conversations with a level of awareness, which is important to building respectful relationships.

We look forward to sharing with you our National Reconciliation Week celebrations in the coming posts.
