Always was always will be…

“Always was, always will be aboriginal land.” This powerful statement is associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people fighting for land rights. Over decades punctuated with significant protest events these words have stood out and resonate today highlighting how the journey towards reconciliation has been a slow and long road which we still navigate today.

Last month our Operations Manager, Anthony Ross and our Indigenous Business Manager, Jarrod Hayden attended a panel discussion organised by one of our clients advocating the Uluru Statement from the heart.

The Australian Parliament website explains the statement’s origins as from “A constitutional convention bringing together over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders in 2017 at the foot of Uluru in Central Australia on the lands of the Aṉangu people.
The majority resolved, in the ‘Uluru Statement from the heart’ to call for the establishment of a ‘First Nations Voice’ in the Australian Constitution and a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise a process of ‘agreement-making’ and ‘truth-telling’ between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

At the discussion the panel members shared their experiences in advocating for the Uluru Statement from the Heart, as well as their views on the wider impact such a document has on Australia. It was a powerful event with Anthony commenting that “ it was a highly engaging and informative discussion with passionate speakers who were balanced in their approach to the topic. It was great to see the inclusive nature of the afternoon with a range of attendees from across the industry.”

It was important for NEMMS JV to be a part of this gathering to show our support, not only to our client (who we are proud to associate with these common goals) but also to the Indigenous employees, Directors, Partners and community members who we work with on our road to reconciliation. We hope to play our part in Australia’s journey to reconciliation by actively seeking opportunities to support our partners and Traditional Owners.

Quoting from the statement we endeavor to support our partners;

“In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard.”
